A question for Them That Know DS9:

Why in the world would the number of the first episode be listed as #721? And the consequent episodes start at #403 and keep going up.

Buh? (I swear, this really is Season 1. I checked.) So very confused.

Honestly I have no idea why they did that! hehe

721 is the first episode, I usually don't even go by that numbering...

I see you're starting DS9. Don't get bogged down if the first couple episodes suck the series improves over time (greatly). However, there are some gems in the first season...

I'll be curious what you think!

I...

I have no idea.

I know that DS9 started the counting with the numbering from TNG. I used to know how to read the stardates so I could tell you which season an episode was in just by hearing the stardate. You can't do that with the original series because they just made them up as they went along.

I've heard great things about DS9. It gets recommended a lot to people who liked Babylon 5 (which you so need to see, by the by). I loved B5, so I'm really looking forward to DS9.

*g* Wow, did TNG really have several hundred episodes?

Stardates won't help much with DS9 anyway. Half the episodes list them as 'unknown'.

Seven seasons, 26 episodes a season? (Except for season 2, which was 22 episodes.)

Anyway, each 'year' was 1000 units of the stardate. So episodes in the first season are stardate 41000-41999 and so on, with the second number denoting the season. The rest of the number gives you a general idea of when in the season it takes place. 41590.33 would be approximately mid season.

Hmm. Here's an idea. #721 is probably the production number. Because some of the TNG characters show up, it may have been batched with the Next Gen episodes when in production.

Wow, complicated... I'm sure I'd know all this stuff if I'm ever in the fandom. As it is, I mostly boggle.

I blame Wikipedia. And the Star Trek encyclopedia that I got my dad yarns and yarns ago.

If you're looking at the dvds, I've always wondered wtf was up with that. The Voyager episodes are numbered oddly too. I just kind of ignore the numbers or they drive me insane.

I'm starting to think driving people insane was part of the 'fun' the designers had.

They were all "We just made them pay a ridiculous amount of money! Let's push them over the brink!"

"Considering the amount just paid, the brink can't be all that far. Mwahahah!"
