I finally bought the first disc of this series, yesterday, and got to watch it. On surprising thing I noticed, this time around - one that I did not notice before - is that the written text used in the story's world is all in Russian. The Cyrillic alphabet is used, and the content is absolutely coherent (if you can read Russian, that is). Which makes a lot of sense, if you think about it. The wolf plays a large part in Russian folklore, and many of the views displayed in the myths are echoed in Wolf's Rain. I haven't come across anything like the legend that serves as the story's core, but that could just be because my sources are limited. Now that I think about it, there are other signs of Russian influence throughout the episodes: most obviously Quent's penchant for Vodka (which tastes nasty, when drunk straight, but that's neither here nor there).
