Aug. 24th, 2008 12:33 pmStill reading Kage Baker's Company novels. I just finished The Children of the Company last night.
Thoughts so far:
-
captainecchi, I'm starting to see what you mean about 'Mendoza's disastrous love life.' I liked Mendoza well enough in Iden, but have steadily been losing patience with her since. She's just so... self-absorbed. Like, this is her tragic love and the rest of the world can go to hell. Sadly, I'm not being hyperbolic. This is much more forgivable when she's chronologically eighteen than when she's hundreds of years old.
- Despite this, I'm actually quite fond of Nicholas/Edward/Alec (Mendoza's boy). Especially ( cut for spoiler ) Admittedly, I'm a sucker for the charismatic rebel leader type. Which he is even when he isn't, if that makes any sense.
- I miss Joseph. He's been absent since The Graveyard game and that makes me sad. The guy's so infectious I find it impossible not to love him even when (I have a feeling) he's taking the complimentary fruit basket to hell.
- Lewis is my darling! Seriously, I just want to cuddle this man. I also think that what Baker did to him ranks very high on my list of authorial sadism done expertly. *shudder* She better get him out of that predicament and soon.
- I never expected to feel for Victor this much, but ouch! I can't quite decide whether what Baker did with him is more or less evil than what she did with Lewis, but evil it is.
- Conclusion: Baker is a sadistic bitch and I love her for it.
