I've never really spent much time in Slower Delaware. My concept of Delaware stops at the Canal (except for a few brief high-school-athletic excursions to St. Andrews).
Hee. I had to be more granular, since southern PA started about 500 feet from my parents' house.
I've still never been to Rehoboth, which is an abomination unto Nuggin to my godchild's mother, whose mother lives in Lewes. It's funny; I do a 1-hour commute each way daily in Massachusetts and I constantly ramble around central and western Mass, but the 1-or-so hour drive from Hockessin to Rehoboth has never been high on my radar screen.
Oh no, I absolutely am with you on the slower lower DE. I'm in Florida now, but I'm from Sussex. Georgetown/Seaford/Laurel area. It's. very slow. I was telling someone last night that when I was growing up no one ever used the front door: the front door was for bad news or travelling salesmen. Everyone came to the back door. And the back door was never locked. So the neighbors would come in without knocking and start to inspect your housekeeping.
...I like old things and history but there is a time and place it is just too far.
Hee. Old timey Southernisms. This is why, I'm now learning, so many Yankees think of Delaware as this weird mishmash of cultures, and yet still somehow Southern. And yet the Virginians I lived among for many years thought of Delaware as Yankee. Ahhhhh, well.
Godchild's father's family is from Seaford, which makes the fact that Godchild is being raised Jewish a special sort of thing...
