Random New DW Season 2 Review-lets
Sep. 17th, 2006 12:27 pmNo matter how many times I re-watch this episode, my mind keeps referring to Finch as Evil!Giles, and this gives me much glee.
Had a little trouble making sense of why Rose would be thrilled at the idea of Sarah Jane travelling with them, but resent Mickey for it. All I could come up with was "Well, Sarah'd totally be up for that threesome. Mickey, notsomuch." Proof that it's dangerous, letting one's Rose muse spend too much time around one's Jack muse.
Wow, Lis Sladen actually got even more beautiful as she got older. I'd be jealous, but I'm too busy going all starry-eyed.
OMG, the Doctor has a type. An eerily specific type no less. Blondes whose names start with 'R'. Rose, Romana, Reinette. Coincidence, I think not!
The Doctor should have gone after Mickey. Of this, I am certain. The issues Rose is dealing with in this episode have already been dealt with, in Father's Day, and honestly? She handles stuff fine on her own. They barely even interract. Not to mention I would have loved to see Ten bonding with Mickey. It wouldn't have even altered the plot much.
Plus, as a writer, I wish the episode had gone for the undercut, when Mickey says "You can only run after one of us, and it won't be me." The Doctor's actions should surprise, not be predictable.
The little Rose dog is precious! And likely spoiled off its little doggy ass.
I think the episode titles in this two-parter should have been reversed, for greater effect.
Ok, they totally got me, with Jackie the Cyber(wo)man. I squeaked, and not in a good way.
Mrs. Moore, you are made of win. Will you marry me? I know you're already married, and you seem to fancy the Doctor, and you sort of wind up dead, but those are all mere details.
Jake, you are a gigantic woobie. Now, tell me this: do you have an Irish accent, or just some sort of British I can't identify.
On another note, I say this with love, but what kind of lug puts a Jack, a Jake and a Jackie all in the same series? In their defense, Jack only appears in Season 1, and Jake in Season 2, and there's no interaction between any of the above, but still. Yes, yes, I know. Rusty loves reusing names.
Back to the main 'review'. Miiiiickey! Love! I really wish he'd been a companion for longer, but he had an awesome exit. Becoming the hero we (well, I) always knew he could be, and riding off into the sunset with Jake.
Speaking of. We have confirmation that Jake and Ricky were a couple. No, I don't necessarily think this means there'd be anything romantic between Jake and Mickey, especially with the way Micky promises he's not trying to take Ricky's place, but the dynamic is bound to be lovely. And angsty. But that's a given.
Also, Paris! Good place for a first date, that. Hey, I had to say it.
What do I hate? The ending of this episode! How much do I hate it? Sooo much.
Rose, I realize you have Daddy Issues, but telling that boy to go with his abusive asshole father was both moronic and selfish on your part. I can accept personal selfishness, such as your behavior in Father's Day. That was, well, personal, and understandable despite the disastrous consequences. This? This was just infurriating.
I swear, the Doctor's just jealous of this cat. Not only does the cat get to be ginger when he doesn't, but Rose calls it and not him a 'beautiful boy'. Total ruffled feathers.
This episode was all about the Doctor and his relationship with cats. Really.
Ok, not really. Here's what I think. Having three abusive father stories in a row was tacky. (The Idiot's Lantern, Ida running from her father in The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit, and Fear Her.) Do I think this was deliberate? Probably not. Most likely it was a coincidence and lack of communication between the separate episode writers. Was it unfortunate? Oh, yes.
On the plus side, this story made being stuck in a drawing seem like the bleakest, creepiest fate alive. So success there.
The thing with the Olympic torch was prime cheese, but I loved it anyway. Very Doctor thing to do.
Must rewatch The Christmas Invasion, New Earth, Tooth and Claw, The Impossible Planet, The Satan Pit, and Love and Monsters, before commenting further.
Must cool down before I can talk coherently about Army of Ghosts and Doomsday. (Yes, I did like them.)
God, I miss Season 1 Rose.
