As mentioned earlier, I have on hand the library's copy of the first half of TNG's first season. Now, as I'm a very casual Trek fan, I'm hardly going to marathon the whole thing. Instead, I pick episodes based on these criteria:

1. The episode contains Q
2. The episode focuses on the Holodec
3. The summary makes it sound shiny/it's written by someone I like
4. Exclude episodes I've already seen, unless I remember them to be staggeringly brilliant.

These were my selections for episodes 1-16:

"Where No One Has Gone Before" (Written by Diane Duane; promising concept) [Note: Despite this story praising Wesley left and right, I actually found him non-annoying here. Am I a freak?]
"Hide and Q" (Q. Duh.)
"The Big Goodbye" (Holodec)
"Too Short a Season" (Haven't seen it yet, but the idea sounds good)

Episodes seen previously:

"Encounter at Farpoint", "The Naked Now" and "Datalore".

Now comes the real question. Am I missing out on any episodes I really should see?

YES!!! Finally a fandom that I know! :-D (aka, you got to introduce me to Doctor Who)

anyways, Good selection! Where No One Has Gone Before is an awesome episode actually. Hide and Q is unfortunately the worst of the Q episodes in my opinion. The Big Goodbye is pretty good. Too Short A Season wasn't that memorable for me, but good choice.

The first half of season 1 is mixed. If you're a diehard fan, some of them are quite fun, but for a casual fan like you. I'd skip most of them. (Angel One is a cool concept, a society run by women and men are second rate, but terribly done) The second half actually is well done, with some awesome episodes.

The key episodes:

The Battle an excellent excellent Picard episode. One of the best of season 1.
Lonely Among Us is a fun episode, I'd recommend it.
Haven despite being a slightly lame episode, it does have Lwaxana Troi who is hilarious.
Coming Of Age is a good one. They try to start a bit of continuing plot with this one, which connects to Conspiracy.
Heart of Glory really awesome Klingon episode. It has the Klingon death growl! \m/ (there's a reason for it)
The Arsenal Of Freedom is a really good action episode. I've shown this one at KinoTreka.
Symbosis is the first "moral questioning" episode.
Skin Of Evil despite the terrible special effects is a good one to watch.
Conspiracy one of the best of season 1 in my opinion. A really cool continuing from Coming Of Age.
The Neutral Zone another one of the best of season 1. This one has repercussions later on in the series. hehe

Any more questions! :-D

Actually, let me know when you're gonna watch them, cus maybe I'll join you!

Wow, I totally glanced over the fact you said you had the first half of season 1. hehe!

At least you know what to look forward to? hehe

I will introduce you to Doctor Who with great pleasure and glee! You know you're welcome over anytime, right? (You remember my address, yes?)

On what I've seen so far: "WNHGB" - Awesome, as you said. "Hide and Q" - Agreed, but any Q episode is better than none. "TBG" - Good stuff. "TSAS" - Just watched and liked a great deal.

Of your other recommends, only "Lonely Among Us", "The Battle", and "Haven" are on the first half, though Belmont has the second half in, so I'll be getting it soon.

I *think* I may have already seen "The Arsenal of Freedom" and "Skin of Evil". At Treka, actually.

As for the rest, you know you want to come over and watch 'em with me. ^_^

You might like 11001001, what with Riker falling for a holodeck chick.

Other than that, my suggestions have already been suggested!

In season two I'd suggest:
Elementary, Dear Data (holodeck hijinks)
The Measure of a Man (if you like courtroom stuff - a trial to determine if Data is his own property or Federation property)
Time Squared (neat playing-with-time stuff)
Q Who? (Q, of course)
Manhunt (holodeck hijinks)

Niiiice! All of those sound like excellent suggestions. Thanks!

No problem! I loved TNG and watched most of it (the vast majority) in its original run. Then I obsessed a little.

I can also tell you to stay far far away from Shades of Gray, which is one of those recap-type episodes that acts as filler for a season.

Agreed on Shades of Gray!

What an unfortunate episode!

Easily the worst of the series, and there were some stinkers early on. Man do I hate recap filler.

I second 'The Measure of a Man.' As a Data fan, that's one of my all-time favorite episodes.

The Measure of a Man is an amazing episode. One of the best of the early seasons!

So it's not even one of those 'So Bad It's Wonderful' eps, then? Cause those can be fun.

You showed that at Treka too, didn't you?

Nooooooo. It's just plain bad.

My favorite episode EVER is The Inner Light, but that's way later. It makes me cry every time I watch it, not because it's super sad, but just bittersweet.

If you want bad and amusing, The Game is pretty funny, as is Angel One.
