As mentioned earlier, I have on hand the library's copy of the first half of TNG's first season. Now, as I'm a very casual Trek fan, I'm hardly going to marathon the whole thing. Instead, I pick episodes based on these criteria:

1. The episode contains Q
2. The episode focuses on the Holodec
3. The summary makes it sound shiny/it's written by someone I like
4. Exclude episodes I've already seen, unless I remember them to be staggeringly brilliant.

These were my selections for episodes 1-16:

"Where No One Has Gone Before" (Written by Diane Duane; promising concept) [Note: Despite this story praising Wesley left and right, I actually found him non-annoying here. Am I a freak?]
"Hide and Q" (Q. Duh.)
"The Big Goodbye" (Holodec)
"Too Short a Season" (Haven't seen it yet, but the idea sounds good)

Episodes seen previously:

"Encounter at Farpoint", "The Naked Now" and "Datalore".

Now comes the real question. Am I missing out on any episodes I really should see?

No problem! I loved TNG and watched most of it (the vast majority) in its original run. Then I obsessed a little.

I can also tell you to stay far far away from Shades of Gray, which is one of those recap-type episodes that acts as filler for a season.

Agreed on Shades of Gray!

What an unfortunate episode!

Easily the worst of the series, and there were some stinkers early on. Man do I hate recap filler.

So it's not even one of those 'So Bad It's Wonderful' eps, then? Cause those can be fun.

Nooooooo. It's just plain bad.

My favorite episode EVER is The Inner Light, but that's way later. It makes me cry every time I watch it, not because it's super sad, but just bittersweet.

If you want bad and amusing, The Game is pretty funny, as is Angel One.

I second 'The Measure of a Man.' As a Data fan, that's one of my all-time favorite episodes.

The Measure of a Man is an amazing episode. One of the best of the early seasons!

You showed that at Treka too, didn't you?
