I interrupt my viewing on Torchwood episode two to bang my head against the laptop screen and mutter. Gwen! Stop being incompetent, dammit! Who let this bint into the police academy? And while we're at it, Jack, what were you thinking, hiring her?

Is it too late to replace her with Rhys the boyfriend, who I'm liking more and more?

Mind, I'm five minutes, thirty-nine seconds in. There may yet be improvements. Or she may get worse and I'll be forced to marathon more Babylon 5 to regain stable blood pressure, sanity and respect for womankind. Mmmmm, Ivanova...

ETA: Eighteen minutes, fourty-seven seconds. Gwen still bumbling about. On the plus side, I'm liking Toshiko more and more. Hell, I'll even take Carys - the girl possessed by the alien. Her, at least, I feel bad for.

ETA 2: Not only useless, but a hypocrite too. For all her babbling about wasting time, Gwen takes time out to research Carys's background, just so she can be a 'humanizing influence' on Jack. How, exactly, is this helping Carys with the alien possession thing that Gwen claims to feel so passionate about?

ETA 3: She's...never used a gun. She's a fucking policewoman, and she's never used a gun? Right.

ETA 4: Ok, the ending didn't suck. But I still could use a drink.

I never said they were high hopes.

That's good. Less damage from the falling. XD

... and re: your last ETA, guns are illegal in the UK. PCs don't have them so Gwen wouldn't know how to use one.

Aha. Ok, that explains a bit. Still doesn't undo all her other incompetencies.

...uh, you're gonna want to mainline some B5. XD;;; I'm just going to hope that in future episodes she suddenly gets more competent because er...yeah. -__-;

Yeeeaaah. At least it's not just me noticing this.

That episode is kind of painful. RTD and crew can't decide if they want her competent or innocent and instead of making her both they're waffling. She makes Rose look like Emma Peel sans catsuit and that's sad because Rose was a civvie with less training. -__-;;;

My thoughts exactly. Dude, she makes me look like a better idea for a Torchwood employee, and I trip over air on a regular basis and have the attention span of a toddler.

I think part of the problem is the actress. She's a good actress but I'm not really sure she's right for being the lead actress here. I feel bad but Billie would be pulling this off better somehow. Miss Myles is a bit too mild, if that makes any sense. The other problem is the writers can't seem to figure out a tack to take with her yet and so it feels like they'recasting about trying to find something that works. And did we really need it hammered in repeatedly that she is the "humanizing influence for Torchwood"? Given that she's probably going to end up dropped her rather adorable boyfriend for some sort of emotional affair with Jack ... Uh, not sure what that says about humanity other than we're way fickle.

Even if Jack is rather hot. ^~

If she has anything more than a shag with Jack, I will physically vomit. Jack very rarely gets involved for real, and has better taste when he does.

Dear God, I sound like one of those fangirls.

She's a Welsh policewoman. And a beat policewoman. They don't carry guns. Remember, guns are, for the most part, illegal in the UK. There are a few police who carry guns, but not many.

I don't know. I didn't mind the 'humanizing influence', mostly because at the time, they thought they had some time. Carys was in custody.

But I'm not too impressed with Gwen just yet either. More Jack, though.

Yep. As I learned from a comment above. As I said there, though, it still doesn't undo every other moment of incompetence she has.

The time you could argue. It's mostly her...arrogance? It's not the right word, but it'll do. She really doesn't know shit about these people, and yet she's making judgements. Yet the writers set her up as the nice one? Sorry, no.

'More Jack' seconded.

Yeeeah. I need to actually sit down and read all the comments before making my own. :)

Well, we've seen before that Torchwood isn't exactly the most...considerate organization. Christmas Invasion, you could blame on Harriet Jones, Prime Minster (we know who you are). But in Army of Ghosts/Doomsday, Torchwood pretty much went out of their way to ignore warnings, so long as it was for the good of Britian or the world. You get from previous comments that Gwen doesn't like the idea of them trying to solve things by covering up deaths (the hospital porter, the guy in the club bathroom) and Jack's very American idea of 'shoot first, ask questions later'.

I want Gwen to grow up, honestly. While I can deal with the 'humanizing influence', what I'd like to see is an episode where she can't save somebody. Even better, one where she has to be the one to make the decision to pull the trigger.

And for the love of all that is holy (and my favorite OTP at the moment), Gwen had better stay with her boyfriend!

Seconded, thirded, and whatever the actual word for 'four-ded' is.

Also, word! Plus I like her boyfriend.
