Fire bad; Martha pretty.

See "Impossible Planet" instead, cause Chibnall ain't even ripping off other people's shows anymore.

Martha kissed a guy! That was good.

And the Doctor's hot when he's writhing in agony.

That's about it for me, though.

Excellent points, both! (I'm so amused you and [livejournal.com profile] wired_lizard had pretty much the same reaction there.)

I am so completely unsurprised by that. *G*

What I liked best was that the captain was played by an actress who once played a bad girl in EastEnders. It was cool seeing her again.

She was pretty cool. Would have been cooler if we'd gotten better characterization. The plot got so muddled/rushed I never wound up catching most characters' names, and that's pretty bad.

I spotted, as well as The Impossible Planet - Red Dwarf, Sunshine (the movie), Event Horizon (movie) and Red Drawf at the very least....

Sadly I haven't seen any of the abovementioned. But it's Chibnal, so I'm not surprised to hear that in the least.

See, people say that and I don't like his LoM episodes, but I love his Torchwood stuff - I think his are the best TW episodes.

I'd have to disagree on Torchwood. His episodes have some brilliant moments, which makes it all the more frustrating, but overall, I've found them to be the weakest of the bunch. I suspect that Chibnall would actually be a decent writer, provided he's given a strict editor and never allowed to try for 'epic'.

He wrote my second and third favourite eps - Cyberwoman and Countrycide. Countrycide was my fave until the penultimate episode ran. But I was always more or less on my own with this - I hated Peter Hammond's episode with the fairies.

The problem with Small Worlds is that it's a perfectly good episode - of a totally different series. Fantasy without even the slightest Sci Fi justification (in a sci fi series) does not easy suspension of disbelief make. Countrycide I quite liked, though it didn't go as far as it could. When your target audience has been brought up on CSI and the like, trying to be edgy is not enough. You've got to hit harded. Cyberwoman was a good idea, brought down by awkward dialogue and some unforgiveable costuming choices.
