Jan. 7th, 2008 07:11 pmI just finished Lois McMaster Bujold's Komarr, and I'm happy to report that I adore Ekaterin. Was there ever any doubt? Well, yes. Truth of the matter is, I never really warmed to any of Miles's previous love interests. There was nothing patently wrong with any of them, that I can name, but they all inevitably felt like the Hero's Girl, to me. Ekaterin, on the other hand, feels like a protagonist in her own right as well as a worthy match for Miles. A lot of this likely had to do with the way Bujold told half the book from Ekaterin's point of view, but the way a number of her actions smoothly undercut some popular romance novel cliches didn't hurt either. This time, I found myself cheering on the romance for its own full sake, and not just because I wanted Miles to succeed.
On the downside, I only have two more books, plus Dreamweaver's Dilemma and "Winterfair Gifts" left before I utterly run out of Vorkosigan Saga books. Woe.
