I just finished Lois McMaster Bujold's Komarr, and I'm happy to report that I adore Ekaterin. Was there ever any doubt? Well, yes. Truth of the matter is, I never really warmed to any of Miles's previous love interests. There was nothing patently wrong with any of them, that I can name, but they all inevitably felt like the Hero's Girl, to me. Ekaterin, on the other hand, feels like a protagonist in her own right as well as a worthy match for Miles. A lot of this likely had to do with the way Bujold told half the book from Ekaterin's point of view, but the way a number of her actions smoothly undercut some popular romance novel cliches didn't hurt either. This time, I found myself cheering on the romance for its own full sake, and not just because I wanted Miles to succeed.

On the downside, I only have two more books, plus Dreamweaver's Dilemma and "Winterfair Gifts" left before I utterly run out of Vorkosigan Saga books. Woe.

I admit that my problem with the Vorkosigan books is that I eventually get tired of everyone's loving Miles. (I know that this isn't actually true - a lot of people hate Miles - but everyone either loves or respects Miles and Miles is, while highly self-destructive, generally well-taken care of by those around him.) ...this is part of the reason I really like some events in the book immediately following the one you just finished.

I just started re-reading the series (I'm to the point where Cordelia et al. bust into the Residence in Barrayar). Yum indeed. Though I enjoy most of Bujold's work, I'd really like more Vorkosigan and less Sharing Knife just now.

Would you explain to my wife that just because the story is no longer is told from a woman's perspective doesn't mean that all the female characters become flat and/or stereotypical?

and yeah miles is far too well liked... personally i prefer mark and the black gang all the way...
a word of warning, Winterfair Gifts can only be read as a fanfic and not a good one at that. i have no idea what lmb was on.

trialia: Ziva David (Cote de Pablo), head down, hair wind-streamed, eyes almost closed. (Bujold - hopelessly monosexual)

Hee! I got an eBook voucher for "Winterfair Gifts" for Christmas, and I just finished reading it last night. Lovely story. "Komarr" is the only VK book I don't have, at this point, though I've not read "Dreamweaver's Dilemma". :)

Also, Cordelia is still my favourite character.
