So, let's say - hypothetically speaking - that one was in the market for a Playstation 2. Would it be possible to hook one up to a laptop (or other computer monitor,) like one would to a TV? Cause I do not feel like getting into TV wars with my folks.

Beyond that, any other thoughts on Playstation 2 consoles, the purchasing thereof? Slim=good or bad? If buying used, what's doable and what's questionable? If buying new, what outlets might have the best values?

Slimline is bad. They overheat. Whether or not you can plug them into your laptop, I'm not sure. I've never done that with mine, but I would assume it's possible if you have the right cables.

Buying used, always check with different-coloured discs that the laser is in perfect working order. It can fuck up on certain discs if it's not completely fine. I don't know if you'd be able to get one new at this point, since they've been out ten years. (Mine was new ten years ago and is still going strong - better life than the PS3, from all I've heard.)

What do you mean by different-colored discs?

There are new PS2s available from Amazon, but the useds from the Marketplace seem like a better bargain overall, particularly if the seller has like 40,000 positive reviews. I'm eying one right now, actually.

You would probably need some form of TV-tuner card to go into a laptop from a PS2. The PS2 outputs in the standard, um, red/yellow/white cables (I don't know A/V terms very well), which I've never known to be on a laptop. However, there might be connectors to make it S-video or Firewire or whatever.

If you're going to be playing the games exclusively on the computer anyway, you might also consider skipping the PS2 box entirely and downloading a PS2 emulator for the PC (http://www.emulator-zone.com/doc.php/ps2/), then investing in a PS2 controller-to-USB adapter.
